"You have gone too far, Loki. This is no game. Soon I shall enter the Odinsleep and Asgard will not have my power to protect it to bring the Frost Giants here to try to usurp your own father!"
―Odin to Loki[src]

Odin, the Allfather, is the ruler of Asgard, the father of Thor and the adoptive father of Loki. He sleeps once a year to regain his strength in a sleep cycle known as the "Odinsleep" to protect his kingdom from invaders like the Frost Giants. After he banished Loki to the Isle of Silence, he became cross with Thor's decision to remain on Midgard during the next Odinsleep instead of helping to protect Asgard, but he decided to let him go.

Falling into the Odinsleep, Loki schemed after he was freed by the Enchantress and the Executioner and started a plan to conquer Asgard with it's main enemies. He was temporarily succeeded, but was ultimately defeated by Asgardian forces as well as the Avengers. Odin then banished him to a realm to be tortured by the Midgard Serpent.

Odin was the king of Asgard that served for centuries and fought in many battles including one against Surtur as retold by his sons Thor and Loki. He had been seen as a source of salvation for years as Algrim and the Dark Elves had begged him for help in their war against the Frost Giants, but refused due to the fact that more Asgardian lives would have been lost than he could have afforded. Instead, he only fought in the war against the Frost Giants once Surtur had aligned himself with the Dark Elves knowing that it was only because Surtur had wanted the to take over Jotunheim. After Algrim had taken the Sword of Surtur from Thor and destroyed the Einherjar, he had attacked Odin and burned his right eye. Thor and Loki were able to stop and destroy Algrim and had made their father proud.

Loki's war[]

"You have the thanks of Asgard, mortals. You have our respect. To the mightiest heroes in the nine realms... Hail Avengers!"

Odin was on the brink of his Odinsleep when Loki had the Frost Giants attack Asgard. Odin sent for Thor who defeated Loki and the Frost Giants. Odin later scolded Loki for this action and then banished him to the Isle of Silence. Thor later tells Odin that what Loki stated to him is right and states that he will handle things on Midgard until Odin calls him in case of a major attack on Asgard. When the Avengers battled Loki, Odin awakens from his Odinsleep and banishes Loki to a dimension where Loki will be tormented by the Midgard Serpent for eternity and respectfully honors the Avengers for having helped Thor to save Asgard.

The Other Worthy[]

Odin and Thor

Odin sees that Surtur has escaped

"If Mjolnir will save your people, then take it."
"Thank you."
"My son, there is another way."
Thor, Beta Ray Bill, and Odin[src]

Odin went to Muspelheim to patrol for Surtur, he returned back to Asgard where he reported to his son that Surtur was gone. The Warriors Three interrupted and reported to Odin that Heimdall was troubled. Thor suggested that he would go.[1]

When Thor was about to be finished by Beta Ray Bill who was carrying Mjolnir, he summoned the one who worthy to lift up Mjolnir. He was surprised to see Bill instead of his own son and apprehended him. He soon summoned Thor and Bill explained his backstory mistaken their aura the same as the Fire Demons. When Thor offered his hammer to Bill to save his homeworld, Odin refused and suggested that they should go to Eitri to create another hammer for Bill.[1]

Powers and Abilities[]

Odin possesses all the conventional attributes of an Asgardian God. However, as the King of the Asgardians, many of these attributes far surpass almost all other Asgardians, even his son Thor. He has superhuman strength, durability, speed, and metabolism rivalling those of Thor.

  • Immense Magical Power: Odin has immense magical power within him, plus with the Odin Force making him nearly omnipotent and one of the most powerful beings in the Nine Realms.
    • Telekinesis: He is able to restrain both Beta Ray Bill and Loki, as well as control Mjolnir's movements.
    • Teleportation: He teleported Beta Ray Bill and Thor to Asgard from Skuttlebutt.
    • Levitation: He is seen levitating when confronting Loki.
    • Enchantment: Presumably during Thor's childhood, when Mjolnir was constructed, Odin put a worthiness spell on the hammer, preventing anyone from using it except for those who are worthy.
    • Banishment: Via the use of a magical artifact, he banished Loki to the Isle of Silence after his defeat at the hands of Thor.

Gungnir: Odin uses this Asgardian spear as his main weapon of choice making a powerful force to be reckoned with.
