Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes (aka War Machine) is Tony Stark's best friend who is well aware of what he is doing and an officer of the US Armed Forces. He is Iron Man's partner as War Machine and member of the New Avengers.
Biography
Early Life
His early life is largely unknown but it's stated that he joined the U.S. military and became good friends with Tony Stark and Pepper Potts in their first meeting.
When Tony gave him the heavily armed version of the Mark II armor to his best friend, Rhodey took the name War Machine as Iron Man's partner in various hero missions.
Present
When the news report of the battle between Ultimo and Iron Man in California was spread, Rhodey was frustrated as he thought he doesn't need help. Rhodey stated that he should be helping the military and S.H.I.E.L.D. but Tony refuses to listen.
Back in Stark Tower, Rhodey had told Pepper not to worry about his armor, but she replied that she's not worried about that, she's worried about Tony and realises that he must do this alone.
After Tony came back to the armory for removing his armor, Rhodey even stated to Tony that he can't do this all alone and that Iron Man needs backup, but Tony almost doesn't believe him of what he talked about and left his Iron Man armory.
Battle against A.I.M
Before A.I.M. invaded Stark Industries, Rhodey was moving the armory to the Avengers Mansion alongside Captain America and Black Panther. After they got ambushed by A.I.M., he donned his War Machine armor to fend them off. As Captain America and Black Panther defended the Iron Man armory from A.I.M. who came to steal them for their new weapons they required until Iron Man showed up with his Mark IX armor to finish the battle.
New Avengers
Rhodey with along Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Thing form to the New Avengers. After hearing Tony's message of the formation of the team, he agreed to be part of it, along fight against Kang the Conqueror. In their first battle, he tried to blast him with his repulsor mini-gun and missiles but was deflected by the time-traveling conqueror.
After their retreat, Rhodey volunteered to push Kang out of Stark Tower and distract him while Spider-Man disables his time machine.
Avengers Assemble
War Machine also helped the Avengers fight the Heralds of Galactus, Terrax with along Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Fist and Quake, and destroy the machine he used to to devour the planet. He later helped them send Galactus into the Negative Zone.
Appearance
Rhodey being a former military officer always wears a military uniform, he is well-groomed and proper haircut and has brown eyes.
As War Machine, it has a similiar look with some of the early versions of Iron Man's armors, but it is equiped with different kinds of weapons that includes lasers and rocket launchers.
Personality
Rhodey's personality is that of a concerned friend to Tony Stark, because of his life as Iron Man. He even argued that he should be helping S.H.I.E.L.D. and the military to make the world safer. He is Tony's best friend after all the trouble and grief Tony gave him, he wants to keep Tony safe even from himself and acts as a bodyguard for him.
Powers & Abilities
Rhodey, like Tony, has no superhuman powers but has the impressive massive firepower of War Machine. He is also a trained military officer to add to his armor's capabilities, making him a force to be reckoned with.
Equipment
War Machine possess a variety of heavy weapons and firepower combat suit, which derives from the Mark II armor. It has an arsenal of heavy guns and missiles to do the job of taking out foes at long range.

Background in other media
- His appearance is different than most other versions of him in other movies and series, though his War Machine armor resembles the live-action film and video game version from Iron Man 2.
- War Machine is the only character who in the comics has never been a member of the New Avengers.
